Crossing this land
This rolling, sturdy, bounteous earthen land
that is not mine
In a corner of a section
in a corner of a county
in a corner of a state that is not mine
A corner of my heart still occupied by what I have there.

For I have borne children there and I have
tilled a garden there
and from a small square frame house
of peeling boards
and a hundred years of smells
with dusty memories around the edges
crafted a home where love was made and
dreams were true.

There I have loved a generation that was not mine
a generation long tied
to that square mile of land
a generation born
lived
loved
labored
and now buried.

We buried them in that corner
under that land
and under a name
The same name which my children bear
children who soon
will find a corner of their own in which
to make
to dream
to build
and when they go,
new lands and dreams and generations that won’t be mine
will occupy corners of my heart I didn’t know were there.
